Android 14 Released to AOSP

What happened

Android 14 was released to the Android Open Source Project on October 4, 2023. It had been previewed and beta-tested through the year, then rolled out first to Google Pixel devices with other manufacturers following on their own timelines.

What changed

According to the official Android Developers site, Android 14 let developers build richer camera and media experiences with Ultra HDR imaging, more camera extensions, and lossless USB audio. It simplified sign-in using Credential Manager, a unified API for passwords, passkeys and federated sign-in, and let apps provide health and fitness insights securely using Health Connect.

More expressive apps and large screens

The Android Developers site highlights that Android 14 made apps more expressive and personal with predictive back, which shows where a back gesture will take the user, along with per-app languages and grammatical inflection support. It also continued Android's investment in large screens, aiming to deliver engaging, differentiated experiences on tablets and foldables.

Why it mattered

Android 14's Credential Manager and passkey support pushed the platform toward more phishing-resistant sign-in, while Ultra HDR and the camera and audio work targeted the media experiences users care about most on their phones. As with every release, it set a new baseline that developers would target over the following year.
