macOS Sequoia Brings iPhone Mirroring to the Mac

macOS Sequoia ships

Apple released macOS Sequoia on September 16, 2024 as a free software update. It brought iPhone Mirroring, big Safari updates and a new Passwords app, and Apple said that starting the following month it would introduce Apple Intelligence, Apple's personal intelligence system, to the Mac.

iPhone Mirroring

The newest Continuity feature, iPhone Mirroring, lets users access and control their iPhone directly from the Mac, with custom wallpaper and app icons appearing as they do on iPhone. Users can swipe between Home Screen pages, launch apps, and review and respond to iPhone notifications from the Mac while the iPhone stays locked so nobody nearby can see or access what they are doing.

Passwords app and window tiling

An all-new Passwords app puts passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords and other credentials in one place, backed by end-to-end encryption and syncing across Apple devices and to Windows via iCloud for Windows. Easier window tiling suggests a tiled position when a window is dragged to a screen edge, letting users arrange side-by-side tiles or place windows into corners, with new keyboard and menu shortcuts.

Safari and Apple Intelligence

Safari's new Highlights feature uses machine learning to surface directions, article summaries and quick links, alongside a redesigned Reader and a Viewer for videos. Apple said Apple Intelligence would arrive starting the next month on Macs with an M-series chip, adding Writing Tools, a more natural Siri and Private Cloud Compute, with many models running on device. Other additions included scheduled messages, audio transcription in Notes, and topographic Maps.
