macOS Ventura Arrives With Stage Manager and Continuity Camera

macOS Ventura ships

Apple released macOS Ventura on October 24, 2022 as a free software update for Macs with Apple silicon and Intel-based Macs. Apple positioned it around new productivity tools and Continuity features, with headline additions in window management, cross-device camera use, and Safari sign-in.

Stage Manager and Continuity Camera

Stage Manager automatically organizes apps and windows, placing the active window prominently in the center while other windows wait on the left for quick switching, and works alongside Mission Control and Spaces. Continuity Camera lets a Mac use a nearby iPhone's camera as a webcam, including a Desk View that uses the Ultra Wide camera to show the user's face and an overhead view of their desk, plus Center Stage, Portrait mode and a new Studio Light effect.

Passkeys in Safari

Safari introduced passkeys, a next-generation sign-in method designed to replace passwords. Each passkey creates a unique digital key that stays on device and is never stored on a web server, is used with Touch ID or Face ID, and syncs with end-to-end encryption through iCloud Keychain across Apple devices, working across apps and the web. Safari also added Shared Tab Groups for collaboration.

Gaming, Mail and System Settings

macOS Ventura added Metal 3 to take fuller advantage of Apple silicon for gaming, with Capcom's Resident Evil Village announced for the Mac App Store. Mail gained scheduled send, undo send and follow-up reminders, Messages added edit and undo send, and iCloud Shared Photo Library arrived. System Preferences was renamed System Settings with a redesigned layout, and Rapid Security Response was added to deliver security fixes between full updates.
