Fedora Linux 41 Released: DNF 5 by Default

What happened

Fedora Linux 41 was released on October 29, 2024, per the official Fedora Magazine announcement. Fedora hit its early target date after its Quality team validated the candidate builds against the project's release criteria.

DNF 5 by default

The most significant change is that Fedora 41 defaults to DNF 5, a new major release of the command-line package manager. Fedora describes it as faster and smaller, requiring fewer supporting packages. Importantly, it removes the need for the separate microdnf used in containers and memory-constrained systems, so the same DNF can now be used consistently across containers, servers, desktops and devices.

Desktops and hardware

Fedora Workstation 41 is based on GNOME 47, and for command-line users the default terminal changed to the lighter-weight Ptyxis. The KDE Plasma spin shipped KDE Plasma 6.2. On hardware, Fedora 41 added integrated support for Intel IPU6-attached MIPI cameras, the type increasingly common in new laptops, and enabled PipeWire for video in Firefox by default, addressing a long-standing pain point. Image-based Fedora variants moved to a new bootc tool as the successor to rpm-ostree.

Why it mattered

Standardising on DNF 5 simplified Fedora's package management story across every form factor, while GNOME 47 and the MIPI camera work improved the everyday desktop experience on current hardware. As usual, features landing in Fedora previewed what would later reach the broader Red Hat ecosystem.
