What happened
Docker Desktop for Linux reached general availability on May 10, 2022, announced on the Docker blog and unveiled at DockerCon 2022. It gave developers using Linux desktop environments the exact same Docker Desktop experience already available on macOS and Windows. Docker noted that Desktop for Linux had been the second-most-popular issue on its public roadmap.
What Docker Desktop provides
Docker Desktop is an easy-to-install application for building and sharing containerised applications and microservices. It comes bundled with container tools including Kubernetes, Docker Compose, BuildKit and vulnerability scanning, and provides the Docker Dashboard, a graphical interface for managing containers, images and volumes with sane and secure defaults for resource consumption. The Linux release also included Docker Extensions, letting developers integrate additional tools built by Docker, partners or the community.
A unified experience
The announcement explained that Linux developers wanted a unified Docker experience across all major operating systems, immediate access to new features that had historically appeared first on Windows and Mac, the seamless Kubernetes integration Docker Desktop provides, and the UI that makes managing containers and images easier. Developers happy using Docker Engine directly on Linux could continue to do so; Desktop was an additional option, not a replacement.
Availability and packaging
At launch Docker provided deb and rpm packages with specific support for Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora, an experimental package for Arch Linux, and planned support for 64-bit variants of Raspberry Pi OS. Docker said its immediate plans included making installation and updates as seamless as possible and broadening distribution compatibility based on community feedback.
Why it mattered
For years, Linux developers had access to Docker Engine but not the polished Docker Desktop experience. Bringing Desktop to Linux closed that gap, giving teams a consistent, feature-complete environment across Mac, Windows and Linux and ensuring Linux users could benefit from new Docker Desktop features as they shipped.
