JetBrains Unveils 'JetBrains Air' for Agentic Software Development

From the individual IDE to the whole system

JetBrains CEO Kirill Skrygan summed up the strategic pivot in the announcement: 'For 26 years, we have focused primarily on the individual developer workbench. Now, we are building for the wider system through which agentic work is initiated, executed, coordinated, reviewed, and governed.' In other words, JetBrains wants to own not just where you write code, but the pipeline through which humans and autonomous agents collaborate on delivering it.

The three pillars of Air

The suite is organized into three parts. 'Air in JetBrains IDEs' is a complete agentic development experience for directing and orchestrating agents and verifying their work inside JetBrains IDEs. 'Air Teams' is a new way to coordinate and automate software-delivery workflows involving both developers and autonomous agents. And 'Air Governance' (formerly JetBrains Central) handles organizational policy, visibility, auditability, cost management and accountability for AI-assisted and agent-driven development, the parts enterprises need before they let agents loose at scale.

A rolling rollout

JetBrains Air will develop through a rolling series of releases rather than a single launch. Over time, Skrygan said, the suite will extend further into mobile and remote experiences, letting developers initiate, monitor, review and continue agentic work as it moves between environments. The company also plans to feed more of JetBrains' own intelligence into agentic workflows, drawing richer context from code, architecture, repositories, runtime behavior and organizational knowledge, and to improve how work is routed between developers, models, agents and services.

Why it matters

Air is JetBrains' bid to stay central as AI agents reshape how software gets built. The governance angle is the tell: much of the industry can already generate code with agents, but organizations are stuck on oversight, cost control and accountability. By packaging IDE-level agent orchestration, team coordination and enterprise governance into one system, JetBrains is targeting exactly the gap between 'agents can write code' and 'we can safely ship what they write.'
