OBS Studio 28 Adds HDR, Qt 6 and Native Apple Silicon

A 10th-anniversary release

OBS Studio 28.0 was released on September 1, 2022, which the project noted marked the 10th anniversary of OBS, exactly ten years after Jim released the first version. It was one of the largest releases in the free and open-source streaming and recording tool's history.

10-bit and HDR encoding

The headline feature added support for 10-bit and HDR video, with new color format and color space settings in advanced settings. HDR and 10-bit can only be encoded with AV1 and HEVC encoders, with recommended HDR settings of Color Format P010 and Color Space Rec. 2100 PQ. Games running in HDR can now be properly tonemapped to SDR when composing in SDR, and capture cards that support it can capture and stream in HDR.

Qt 6 and Apple Silicon

OBS 28 upgraded its user interface toolkit from the end-of-life Qt 5 to Qt 6, gaining better support for newer systems like Windows 11 and Apple Silicon, though it dropped support for Windows 7/8, older macOS versions, Ubuntu 18.04 and all 32-bit operating systems, and some Qt 5 plugins stopped working. OBS also shipped native Apple Silicon builds that run without x86 emulation.

Capture and websocket

The release added macOS ScreenCaptureKit support on macOS 12.5+, including direct audio capture without third-party tools on macOS 13+, and added application audio capture on Windows to capture a single process's output. It bundled obs-websocket 5.0 as a first-party plugin, added native SRT/RIST outputs, a new AMD encoder implementation on Windows, and automatic recording splitting by size, duration or hotkey.
