OBS Studio 30 Adds WHIP/WebRTC Output and Safe Mode

OBS Studio 30 arrives

OBS Studio 30.0 was released on November 12, 2023. As announced, it removed support for Ubuntu 20.04, Qt 5 and FFmpeg versions prior to 4.4, tightening its platform baseline while adding significant new output and troubleshooting features.

WHIP/WebRTC output

The headline was a new WHIP/WebRTC output, adding low-latency WebRTC streaming to OBS via the WHIP standard. With WHIP's introduction, the project noted that the older FTL protocol was slated for removal in a release after May 2024. The status bar was also redesigned to present the same information in a more organized way with clearer icons.

Safe Mode and captures

OBS 30 added a Safe Mode that runs without third-party plugins, scripting and websockets; if OBS detects it was not shut down properly, it offers to launch in Safe Mode for troubleshooting, and it can also be triggered from the Help menu. The release added application audio capture on macOS, reworked the macOS virtual camera to work with all applications on macOS 13+, and added Intel QSV H264, HEVC and AV1 support on Linux.

Performance and networking

The release added a shader cache to improve OBS startup time on Windows, and added IPv6 support for RTMP streaming with IPv4 fallback ('happy eyeballs') for dual-stack services. Other additions included full-height docks, drag-and-drop filter arrangement, 10-bit capture and HDR playback for Decklink devices, and a YouTube Live Control Room panel when streaming to YouTube.
