Debian 11 'Bullseye' Released

What happened

Debian 11, codenamed Bullseye, was released as the project's new stable distribution on August 14, 2021, according to the official Debian releases page. It succeeded Debian 10 Buster and became the recommended production release.

What changed

Bullseye added kernel-level support for the exFAT filesystem, so mounting exFAT-formatted media no longer required a separate userspace driver. It introduced a modern printing and scanning architecture built around driverless technologies, letting many printers and scanners work without vendor-specific drivers. The release also refreshed its desktop environments to current versions and, as always, updated thousands of packages across the archive.

Stability and support

As a Debian stable release, Bullseye carried the project's five-year support lifecycle of three years full support plus two years of Long Term Support. It served as the stable branch until Debian 12 Bookworm was released in 2023, after which it became oldstable and later moved under LTS support.

Why it mattered

Bullseye continued Debian's role as a dependable, community-built foundation for servers, desktops and downstream distributions. The exFAT and driverless printing improvements addressed common real-world friction, while the project's careful testing process kept the release focused on reliability rather than novelty.
