Debian 12 'Bookworm' Released

What happened

Debian 12, codenamed Bookworm, was released as the project's new stable distribution on June 10, 2023, per the official Debian releases page. It succeeded Debian 11 Bullseye and became the production release recommended for general use.

Non-free firmware in the installer

The most consequential change in Bookworm was how Debian handles non-free firmware. Historically, Debian's official installation media excluded proprietary firmware, which could leave Wi-Fi, graphics and other hardware non-functional during installation on modern machines. Following a project-wide vote, Debian 12 includes a separate non-free-firmware archive component and ships firmware on the official media, making installation much smoother on contemporary hardware while keeping the distinction between free and non-free software explicit.

A stable base

As with every Debian release, Bookworm rolled up a large, tested snapshot of open-source software and carried Debian's five-year support commitment: three years of full support followed by two years of Long Term Support. It served as the stable release until Debian 13 Trixie arrived in 2025, at which point Bookworm moved to oldstable.

Why it mattered

The firmware change resolved a long-standing practical pain point that had pushed some newcomers toward derivative distributions. Combined with Debian's usual emphasis on stability and its vast package archive, Bookworm made Debian a more approachable choice on modern laptops and desktops without compromising the project's transparency about software licensing.
