Windows 11 Version 25H2 Released as an Enablement-Package Update

Windows 11, version 25H2 became available on September 30, 2025. Rather than a large, separate operating system image, it shipped as an enablement package: a small update that switches on features already staged on the same servicing branch as version 24H2.

What an enablement package is

When two consecutive Windows feature updates share a servicing branch, Microsoft can deliver the newer one as an enablement package. The bulk of the new code is already present on devices through monthly cumulative updates, but dormant; the enablement package simply activates it and updates the version number. The practical benefit is a fast update with a brief installation and a single restart, more like a monthly update than a full feature upgrade.

A reset support clock

Even though the underlying code is shared with 24H2, moving to 25H2 resets the support timeline. Windows 11 feature updates come with 24 months of support for Home, Pro, Pro for Workstations and Pro Education editions, and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. Installing 25H2 therefore extends how long a device keeps receiving monthly security updates, which is a common reason to adopt it.

Windows 11's annual cadence

Windows 11 follows an annual feature-update cadence, with releases in the second half of the calendar year, plus monthly cumulative security updates on the second Tuesday of each month. The enablement-package model, when applicable, makes the yearly jump low-friction for both individuals and IT departments managing fleets.

What to do

For most users on 24H2, updating to 25H2 is straightforward and worthwhile mainly to extend the support window. As with any update, IT teams managing many machines typically validate against their critical applications before broad deployment, but the enablement-package approach keeps the risk and downtime low.
